Hyderabad, April 4, KNT: Around 200 kilograms of mangoes allegedly ripened using excess chemical agents were seized in the Goshamahal area of Hyderabad in Telangana, officials said on Saturday.
The action was taken after authorities found that a trader was using “Diamond Ripe” ethylene sachets beyond the prescribed limits set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The development comes amid heightened monitoring of fruit markets during the mango season, when artificial ripening practices often increase.
Officials said the trader was using six sachets per 20 kg tray of mangoes, exceeding the permissible limit of five sachets.
The violation raised concerns about consumer safety, as excessive use of ripening agents can lead to harmful chemical exposure.
Health experts warned that mangoes ripened with excessive chemicals may pose risks including vomiting, diarrhoea and breathing-related problems.

“Improper use of ripening agents can have adverse health effects, especially if consumed regularly,” a health expert said.
Authorities said the seized stock was removed from circulation, and further action is being taken against the trader under relevant food safety regulations.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding artificial ripening practices, despite regulatory guidelines permitting controlled use of ethylene for safe fruit ripening.
Consumers have been advised to remain cautious while purchasing mangoes, particularly those with unusually bright colour or uniform ripening.
Officials said inspections are likely to continue across markets to ensure compliance with safety norms during the peak fruit season. [KNT]
