Mirwaiz Expresses Concern Over Civilian, Police Deaths Across LoC, Calls for Dialogue and Restraint

Srinagar, July 15, KNT: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday expressed deep concern over reports of civilian and police casualties in the continuing unrest across the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in Rawalakot and Poonch, and called for dialogue, restraint and peaceful engagement to restore normalcy.
In a statement, the Mirwaiz said he was deeply saddened by the reported loss of lives and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and all those affected by the violence.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected by these tragic events,” he said.
The Mirwaiz also voiced concern over the ongoing debate regarding the constitutional and political status and representation of a large number of Jammu and Kashmir State Subjects residing in Pakistan.
He said issues relating to identity, political representation and constitutional rights require sensitivity, dialogue and broad public confidence, adding that the legitimacy of any system of governance ultimately rests on the consent and trust of the people.
Referring to the historical, cultural and familial links across the Line of Control, the Mirwaiz said developments in one part of Jammu and Kashmir resonate deeply with people living on the other side as well as among the Kashmiri diaspora across the world.
He also recalled his family’s historical association with the social, educational, religious and political development of communities across Jammu and Kashmir, including those residing across the LoC.
Stating that he had received expressions of anguish and concern from people across the Line of Control regarding the prevailing unrest, the Mirwaiz urged the Government of Pakistan and the local authorities there to prioritise dialogue and engagement over confrontation.
He appealed for differences to be resolved through consultation and accommodation while ensuring that respect for human rights and the sanctity of human life remain paramount.
The Mirwaiz also urged those participating in the protests to exercise wisdom and responsibility and work towards restoring peace and public confidence at the earliest.
Concluding his statement, he prayed for lasting peace, stability and a peaceful resolution of issues affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir on both sides of the Line of Control. [KNT]
