Police Issuing Political Statements Reflects Failure of Government, Says Mirwaiz
Srinagar, April 1, KNT: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Jammu and Kashmir government, accusing it of pursuing policies aimed at widening the divide between the people and the separatist leadership.
Speaking to KNT after being placed under house arrest, Mirwaiz alleged that the government was preventing Hurriyat leaders from freely interacting with the public and resorting to what he described as repressive measures.
“It is unfortunate that the police have now started issuing political statements on Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir has virtually become a police state where the police appear to have the upper hand even in administrative affairs,” Mirwaiz said.
He maintained that repeated house detentions and restrictions on the movement of Hurriyat leaders would not help the government achieve its objectives.
“The government’s policy is to widen the gap between the people and the Hurriyat leadership. It does not want us to interact freely with the public and continues to adopt repressive measures against both the people and separatist leaders,” he said.
Mirwaiz said he had planned to visit Doabgah to offer condolences at the residence of Muhammad Afzal Guru, but was prevented from doing so after being placed under house arrest.
“I intended to visit the residence of Muhammad Afzal Guru today, but the government confined me to my home. This only reflects its frustration,” he said.
Criticising what he termed the government’s “anti-Hurriyat policies,” Mirwaiz alleged that the administration had failed politically and was allowing the police to assume a larger role.
“How long will this government continue to confine Hurriyat leaders to their homes and curb their movement? It is scared of the Hurriyat leadership and is determined to keep us away from the people. Such tactics will ultimately prove counterproductive,” he said.
Mirwaiz also condemned the alleged arrests of youth and separatist leaders, accusing the authorities of suppressing political dissent.
Meanwhile, the authorities placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and several senior Hurriyat leaders under house arrest, preventing them from visiting Doabgah, the residence of Muhammad Afzal Guru. [KNT]
