Srinagar, July 27, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday voiced concern over reports of the arrest of youths who participated in the recent Jantar Mantar protest, alleging that many of those detained belong to the Muslim community.

In a post on social media, Mehbooba Mufti said disturbing reports were emerging from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and other BJP-ruled states regarding the arrest of participants in the protest.

She alleged that an overwhelming majority of those being targeted were Muslims and said the reported action came despite an assurance by Janata Dal (United) leader J.P. Nadda that all FIRs registered against the protesters would be withdrawn.

The former Chief Minister urged Campaign for Justice and Peace (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke to intervene, ensure that the assurance regarding the withdrawal of FIRs is honoured, and mobilise legal assistance for those facing prosecution.

There was no immediate response from the authorities to the claims made by the PDP chief. [KNT]
