Kargil, July 30, KNT: The Kargil–Leh National Highway (NH-1) was closed to traffic on Thursday after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall blocked the road near Akchamal in Kargil district.

Officials said heavy rain had triggered a debris flow, depositing large quantities of mud, rocks and boulders on the highway and completely disrupting vehicular movement.

Following the incident, road restoration agencies pressed men and machinery into service to clear the debris and restore traffic. Clearance operations were underway, while the highway remained closed pending restoration.

Authorities advised commuters and transporters to avoid travelling on the route until it was declared safe and urged travellers to check the latest traffic updates before planning their journey.

The closure affected the movement of passengers and goods between Kargil and Leh, with normal traffic expected to resume only after the road was fully cleared. [KNT]
