Srinagar, Sep 24, KNT:PDP MLA from Pulwama Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra remained away from the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday as he attended a hearing in a case before an NIA court in Srinagar.
Parra said in a post on X that he was waiting at the NIA court while the Assembly was in session and should instead have been in the House representing the people of his constituency.
“Waiting in an NIA court Srinagar, facing yet another hearing in a UAPA case, when I should be sitting in the Assembly,” Parra wrote.
Reflecting on his absence, the PDP legislator said the situation highlighted a contrast between the functioning of elected institutions and the continuing legal proceedings faced by individuals in Kashmir.
Parra also said Thursday was his birthday and described the occasion as one for reflection rather than celebration, linking his court appearance and absence from the Assembly to what he described as the continuing “grief, fear, silence and unanswered questions” in Kashmir.
Parra is facing proceedings in a UAPA case registered by the Counter Intelligence Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court had in May 2022 admitted him to bail in FIR No. 31/2020 registered at Police Station CIK, Srinagar. [KNT]
