Srinagar, Mar 16, KNT: Tension prevailed at GB Pant Children’s Hospital here on Saturday afternoon after a woman from the old city alleged that she was assaulted by the Medical Superintendent of the hospital.
The woman, identified as Shamima Bano of Fateh Kadal, told reporters at Press Enclave Srinagar that she was slapped and pushed by the Medical Superintendent inside the hospital premises. She alleged that the incident occurred while she was attending to her three month old granddaughter admitted to the hospital.
According to her account, she had spread a blanket in the corridor and was sitting there when the Medical Superintendent asked her to vacate the area. She claimed that while she was gathering her belongings, the official allegedly shouted at her and physically assaulted her. She further alleged that other attendants present at the spot objected to the behaviour.
Shamima said she felt deeply humiliated by the incident and questioned the conduct of a senior hospital official. Her son, Shabir Ahmad, also alleged that when he protested, he was threatened with police action.
The Medical Superintendent was not available for comment. However, then Medical Education Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that he would look into the matter and direct the Principal Government Medical College to ascertain the facts.
The alleged incident sparked unrest among attendants inside the hospital for some time. [KNT]
