Budgam, June 12, KNT: District Development Commissioner Budgam, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar on Wednesday conducted an extensive tour of flood-prone areas across the district to assess preparedness and review measures aimed at preventing damage in case of rising water levels.

Accompanied by senior officers including the Superintending Engineer Hydraulics, SDMs of Chadoora and Beerwah, and Tehsildars of Budgam, Magam and Narbal, the DDC visited vulnerable spots particularly along Shaliganga and Nallah Sukhnag to take stock of the situation on the ground.

At Bemina, she directed officials of the Irrigation Department to immediately strengthen the embankments of the canal passing through the locality. She instructed that protective bunds be safeguarded and ordered the erection of barricades on both sides to restrict vehicular movement on the bund. The Tehsildar Budgam was asked to ensure removal of trees and poplars obstructing the smooth flow of water.

During her visit to Narbal, the DDC inspected vulnerable stretches of Nallah Sukhnag flowing through villages including Makhama, Peth Makhama, Kanihama and Hanjibugh. Officials apprised her of steps taken to prevent erosion of embankments and informed that adequate sandbags had been stocked to deal with any emergency.

She was also briefed that despite improvement in weather conditions, concerned departments remained on alert with requisite machinery and manpower in place.

Interacting with deputations and locals at various locations, the DDC sought first-hand feedback regarding potential weak points and necessary interventions to avert breaches in nallahs and streams.

She also visited villages in Chadoora tehsil and expressed confidence in the district administration’s preparedness, emphasizing proactive coordination among departments to minimize potential losses during any crisis. [KNT]
