EPG Flags Illegal Excavation Near Doodganga Embankment at Channapora

Srinagar, March 8, KNT: The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) has expressed concern over an incident of alleged illegal excavation carried out in the hinterland of the flood embankment of Doodganga Nallah near the Channapora Bridge crossing during the intervening night.
According to the group, unidentified individuals reportedly excavated earth to a depth of nearly five feet in an area adjoining the embankment.
EPG said such activity is illegal and could have serious implications for flood control and the stability of the embankment.
The group stated that excavation in close proximity to the embankment may weaken its structural integrity, particularly during periods of high water discharge or flood situations.
Officials said the site where the excavation reportedly took place falls on government land belonging to the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department.
EPG said any unauthorised excavation or encroachment on such land is a matter of concern from both environmental and safety perspectives.
Following the incident, the Environmental Policy Group said it immediately brought the matter to the notice of the Superintending Engineer, Flood Control Budgam and the Executive Engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control Division Narbal.
During discussions with the officials, the group highlighted the possible risks posed by excavation activities to the safety of the Doodganga Nallah embankment.
The officers concerned, after taking note of the issue, assured that necessary steps would be taken to stop the work at the site and prevent any encroachment on government land.
EPG also said that residents of the area reportedly intervened and helped stop the excavation activity.
The group has urged the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, to issue appropriate directions to ensure that illegal excavation and encroachment on government land are prevented.
It also called for restoration of the embankment to its original position and strengthening of the structure to ensure long-term protection and stability.
EPG said any activity that may compromise the safety of the Doodganga Nallah embankment must be addressed immediately to avoid potential flood risks in the area. [KNT]
