Sopore, March 15, KNT: Three old rusted mortar shells were recovered by police after they were unearthed during excavation work for a bridge construction project in the Mahrajpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday, officials said.

The explosives were discovered by labourers while digging the ground as part of ongoing construction activity for the bridge in the locality.

Officials said the workers noticed suspicious metallic objects during excavation and immediately informed the authorities, prompting a police response.

The discovery briefly halted construction work in the area as a precautionary measure.

A team of Jammu and Kashmir Police reached the site soon after receiving the information and secured the area to prevent any risk to workers or nearby residents.

Police officials said that upon inspection, the objects were identified as three old mortar shells that appeared to be rusted and possibly buried underground for a long period.

The recovered shells were later taken into custody by the police and shifted to a secure location for safe disposal following standard explosive-handling procedures, officials said.

Police have registered a case in this regard. [KNT]
