Jammu, March 28, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said the government is examining a proposal to notify new tourism-worthy areas across Jammu and Kashmir, including a cluster of locations in Doda district, as part of efforts to widen the region’s tourism footprint.

Replying to a question by MLA Doda West Shakti Raj Parihar during the Assembly’s Question Hour, Abdullah listed Udhrana and Sarna in Bhaderwah, Nalthi, Chinta, Guldanda, Padri, Khaleni Top, Lal Draman, areas within Doda town and Shibnote in Premnagar among sites under consideration.

The move reflects a broader push to expand tourism beyond established destinations, even as infrastructure and accessibility in many of these areas remain uneven.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, said the department is focusing on strengthening infrastructure and visitor facilities at key locations. He pointed to ongoing development at sites such as Lal Draman, Dedni, Dal Draman, Ramrachna, Galadhar and Dessa.

Officials say Doda is already recognized as an emerging destination, but sustained promotion and connectivity remain critical challenges.

As part of promotional efforts, the government has organised a series of events over the past two years, including the Lavender Festival, Winter Festival, Mega Wrestling Competition, Maa Chandi Yatra and snow festivals in Lal Draman, aimed at drawing attention to the region.

The Tourism Department also participated in multiple tourism marts during the current financial year to market destinations in Jammu division, including Doda, with similar outreach planned ahead.

On infrastructure, Abdullah said a double-storey guest house is being constructed at Lal Draman at a cost of Rs 75.63 lakh, while additional works such as beautification, viewpoints and public facilities worth around Rs 80 lakh have been completed under the CAPEX budget.

While these initiatives are projected as steps towards boosting footfall and local employment, the long-term impact will depend on sustained investment, connectivity and consistent policy support.

In a separate reply, the Chief Minister said the government is pursuing the outsourcing of the Yoga and Spiritual Centre at Mantalai, with efforts underway to operationalize the facility at the earliest. [KNT]
