Shopian, April 1, KNT: Police in Shopian have seized seven tractors during a crackdown on illegal mining across multiple areas of the district, officials said on Wednesday.
The action was carried out in Heerpora, Berthipora, Wachi and Turkwangam areas as part of a sustained drive against unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals.
The development comes amid intensified efforts by police to curb illegal mining activities and protect natural resources in the district.
Officials said multiple cases were registered in connection with the violations, and vehicles involved in the illegal activity were seized during the operation.
In Heerpora area, police seized three tractors in separate actions, while one tractor each was seized in Berthipora and Wachi.
In Turkwangam area, two tractors were seized for their involvement in illegal mining activities, officials added.
Police said the crackdown is part of a zero-tolerance approach against illegal mining and related environmental violations.
An official said strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in such activities in accordance with the law.
Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with police and report instances of illegal mining.
The drive is expected to continue in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to check environmental degradation and illegal resource extraction in the region. [KNT]
