Mehbooba Mufti Accuses Government of Ignoring Poor, Favouring Elite Bills in Assembly

Kulgam, April 9, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said that several pro-poor proposals brought by her party were rejected in the Legislative Assembly, while measures benefiting affluent sections were taken up by the government.
Addressing party workers in south Kashmir’s Kulgam, Mehbooba Mufti said the government ignored bills aimed at supporting economically weaker sections, including daily wage workers, while prioritizing policies she described as favoring “rich hoteliers.”
She said a bill concerning daily wagers was rejected, and another proposal related to land issues was also turned down after her party opposed the use of bulldozers in such matters.
Mufti further said that her party had demanded the creation of new administrative divisions and districts, including from Pir Panjal, Kokernag, Tral, and Noorabad, to improve governance and public access to services. “Everything we demanded was rejected,” she said.
Highlighting public concerns, Mufti said people were facing difficulties despite expectations of free electricity. “Not speaking of free power, even the government has now handed over two more power projects to NHPC,” she said.
She alleged that decisions taken by the government were not aligned with the expectations of the public, particularly those from economically weaker sections. [KNT]
