Bandipora, April 24, KNT: A rare male musk deer was rescued alive by wildlife volunteers near the Line of Control (LoC) in Wanpora area of Gurez Valley in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, officials said on Friday.

The rescue followed information provided by local residents who spotted the animal in the area. Wildlife official Tanveer Ahmad Lone said a team was immediately dispatched after receiving the alert.

“Soon after we received the call, a wildlife team was deputed to the spot,” Lone said, adding that the animal was safely trapped without any injury.

Officials said the rescue was carried out with caution, keeping in view the sensitive nature of the species. The animal was captured alive and handled carefully during the operation.

Following the rescue, the musk deer was shifted to the Wildlife Range Ajas for initial observation. Lone said it is being further moved to the rehabilitation center at Dachigam National Park for treatment and proper care.

He said such operations reflect the department’s efforts to protect wildlife and conserve rare species in the region. He also urged the public to report sightings of wild animals in distress to enable timely intervention. [KNT]
