Unregulated Poultry Market Sees Price Variation, Buyers Allege Overcharging

Srinagar, May 3, KNT: Consumers across Kashmir have raised concerns over arbitrary pricing of chicken, alleging that sellers are charging rates higher than the officially fixed price in the absence of effective regulation.

Complaints received from multiple districts, particularly Anantnag, indicate that poultry is being sold above the prescribed rate of Rs 135 per kilogram, with some sellers charging Rs 140 to Rs 150 per kilogram.

Consumers said there is little uniformity in pricing, with rates varying from shop to shop, leaving buyers with limited choice but to pay higher amounts.

Consumers also alleged that most chicken sellers are not displaying official rate lists at their outlets, in violation of norms, making it difficult for customers to verify the approved price.

“There is no check. Everyone is selling at their own rate,” said a consumer from south Kashmir, reflecting a broader sentiment among buyers.

The issue highlights gaps in market regulation, with consumers claiming that enforcement mechanisms are either weak or absent, allowing overpricing to continue unchecked.

Consumers have urged authorities to ensure strict implementation of rate lists and regular inspections to prevent overcharging.

The situation has triggered frustration among consumers, who say the lack of oversight has effectively turned the poultry market into an unregulated space where sellers dictate prices. [KNT]
