Prof. Shamim Ahmad Shah Appointed Registrar of IUST on Deputation

Srinagar, May 19, KNT: Prof. Shamim Ahmad Shah, a senior academic from the Department of Geography and Disaster Management at the University of Kashmir, has been appointed as Registrar of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, on deputation following approval by the Chancellor of the University of Kashmir.

An official order issued by the University of Kashmir said the deputation was approved by the Hon’ble Chancellor and conveyed through the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat. The order sanctioned the deputation of Prof. Shah as Registrar, IUST, under the deputation service rules adopted by the University of Kashmir.

According to the order, the deputation took effect from May 18 and shall remain in force until further orders. Prof. Shah was also formally relieved from the University of Kashmir with instructions to report and assume charge at IUST, Awantipora.

Prof. Shamim Ahmad Shah is an academic associated with the University of Kashmir’s Department of Geography and Disaster Management and brings more than 25 years of teaching and research experience to the administrative position.

He earned his Ph.D. in Geography from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and has built a substantial academic profile in geography, environmental studies, and disaster management.

His research interests span tourism studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, environmental planning, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable urban and regional development, particularly in Himalayan environments.

Prof. Shah previously served as Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Kashmir and has supervised nearly 30 M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars during his academic career.

His work has focused significantly on sustainable tourism planning, land-use management, disaster preparedness, and the use of spatial technologies for environmental and developmental assessment.

Academically, he as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust has published more than 100 research papers in national and international journals and remains associated with several research initiatives concerning environmental sustainability and Himalayan geography.

The appointment places an experienced academic and administrator at the helm of IUST’s registry at a time when universities across Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly emphasizing institutional governance, research expansion, and academic reforms.

The University of Kashmir order said the appointment had been made pursuant to Chancellor’s approval and in accordance with deputation rules governing university service. [KNT]
