Srinagar, June 24, KNT: Thousands of mourners participated in the traditional 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar on Wednesday, as a sea of people filled the streets from Guru Bazar to Dalgate in solemn remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala.

The procession commenced from Guru Bazar in the early morning hours and moved along the traditional route through Budshah Kadal, Jehangir Chowk and M.A. Road before culminating at Dalgate.

Black flags and banners were seen adorning several locations along the route, particularly around Jehangir Chowk, reflecting the spirit of mourning associated with Muharram observances.

Numerous sabeels and voluntary service stalls were established by individuals and organizations to provide drinking water, refreshments and assistance to mourners participating in the procession.

Mourners recited elegies and paid tribute to Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions who were martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

The procession passed off peacefully under elaborate security and traffic arrangements put in place by the administration and police.

Officials monitored the movement of the procession throughout the route, while medical and emergency response teams remained stationed at designated locations.

The 8th Muharram procession is among the major events of the Muharram calendar in Srinagar and attracts participation from mourners from different parts of the Valley. [KNT]
