Srinagar, Aug 20, KNT: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has directed ward officers across the city to identify and examine illegal constructions and building deviations in their respective wards without any delay, following the arrest of a junior building inspector in a bribery case.

The directive has been issued to all ward officers, asking them to furnish details of illegal constructions and deviations and take a close look at such cases within their respective jurisdictions.

The move comes after the Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau apprehended SMC Junior Building Inspector Gazala Akhter in Mominabad, Batamaloo, while allegedly demanding and accepting ₹10,000 from a complainant in connection with construction of two structures.

The latest direction puts the focus on the functioning of the SMC’s building enforcement mechanism and the monitoring of construction activity across its wards.

Ward officers have been asked to examine illegal constructions and deviations without delay, indicating a renewed push by the civic body to assess violations on the ground. [KNT]
