New Delhi, April 10, KNT: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, marking a transition in his political career and signaling an impending leadership change in the state.

The oath was administered by C. P. Radhakrishnan at his chamber in Parliament during a brief ceremony. He was later welcomed to the Upper House.

According to constitutional provisions, Kumar can continue as Chief Minister for up to six months after becoming a Member of Parliament. However, rules require him to resign as a Member of Legislative Council within 14 days of being elected to Parliament, which he has already done on March 30.

The development is expected to pave the way for the appointment of a new Chief Minister in Bihar, potentially ending Kumar’s long tenure at the helm of the state.

Kumar took oath in Hindi in the presence of senior leaders including J. P. Nadda, Nirmala Sitharaman, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Ram Nath Thakur, and Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Nitish Kumar is among the longest-serving chief ministers of Bihar. He began his political career as a legislator in 1985 and later served as a Union Minister in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He first assumed office as Chief Minister in 2005. [KNT]
