AIMSA Flags Staff Shortage Crisis at GMC Baramulla, Udhampur, Seeks Urgent Govt Action

Jammu, April 11, KNT: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has raised concerns over manpower shortages and infrastructure gaps at Government Medical College Baramulla and Government Medical College Udhampur, stating that the situation is affecting healthcare delivery in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a representation addressed to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the association highlighted vacancies across multiple categories of staff and the absence of key medical facilities, particularly in north Kashmir.
According to data cited by AIMSA, Government Medical College Baramulla is operating with significant staff shortages. Out of 482 sanctioned posts, 224 are filled while 258 remain vacant. The association stated that this includes shortages among faculty, doctors, and paramedical staff.
The association said the staffing gap has resulted in increased workload on available personnel and has affected service delivery, including longer waiting times and delays in treatment.

AIMSA also pointed to the absence of certain diagnostic and emergency facilities at GMC Baramulla, including MRI services and a Cath Lab. It said patients are required to travel to Srinagar for such services.
Dr Mohammad Momin Khan said that patients and attendants have expressed difficulty due to the need to travel for medical services, adding that delays can affect timely treatment.
The association said similar concerns exist at Government Medical College Udhampur, where 183 out of 236 sanctioned posts are vacant, impacting hospital functioning.
AIMSA has urged the government to fill vacant posts, improve infrastructure, and strengthen specialist services at the affected institutions. It has also called for monitoring mechanisms to oversee implementation of measures.
The association said timely steps could improve healthcare access in underserved regions. [KNT]
