AIMSA Says 18 Distress Calls Received from Indian Students Stranded in Iran

Srinagar, March 8, KNT: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) on Saturday said it has received more than 18 distress calls from Indian medical students stranded in Iran, particularly from Isfahan, where around 32 Indian students are currently staying.
The association said students reported being shifted to a basement after an attack near Darvaze-ye Shirazi area, close to their hostel, amid heightened tensions in the region.
According to AIMSA, distress calls were again received late on the night of March 7 and on the morning of March 8 as the situation remained tense.
Students from Qom, including those studying at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Iran University of Medical Sciences, told the association that they had been relocated after nearby residential buildings were reportedly targeted.
The development left several students frightened and concerned about their safety, AIMSA said.
Students in Kerman also informed the association that their food supplies were running low, adding to the anxiety among those stranded, while students in Shiraz reported hearing explosions in nearby areas.
Amid rising concern, parents of some stranded students staged a protest at Pratap Park in Srinagar, demanding that the Government of India take immediate steps to evacuate their children and ensure their safe return.
Dr Mohammad Momin Khan of AIMSA expressed serious concern over the safety of Indian students and urged the Ministry of External Affairs to take urgent measures for their evacuation. [KNT]
