New Delhi, March 31, KNT: Bharti Airtel on Tuesday announced a $1 billion investment in its data centre subsidiary Nxtra Data Limited, with participation from global investors including Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle and Anchorage Capital, the company said.
The investment will be used to expand Nxtra’s data centre network across India and accelerate its growth in the digital infrastructure space.
The development is significant as India’s data centre sector is witnessing rapid expansion driven by rising demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence and enterprise digital transformation.
Under the investment plan, Alpha Wave Global will invest $435 million, Carlyle $240 million and Anchorage Capital $35 million, with the remaining amount to be infused by Airtel. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals.
Airtel will continue to retain a controlling stake in Nxtra following the transaction, the company said.
Nxtra said it plans to use the funds to scale its infrastructure and expand its services for enterprises, hyperscalers and government clients.
“At Nxtra, we have built one of India’s most advanced and sustainable data centre networks. With around 300 MW capacity today, we aim to scale to 1 GW in the next few years,” Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel, said.

Alpha Wave Global said the partnership aligns with its focus on backing AI-driven businesses and expanding infrastructure supporting advanced technologies.
According to industry estimates, India’s data centre capacity is expected to grow significantly over the coming years, supported by increasing data consumption and demand from large-scale cloud and AI platforms.
