Araghchi Says Netanyahu Call to JD Vance Disrupted United States–Iran Talks

Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday alleged that a phone call from Benjamin Netanyahu to JD Vance during negotiations contributed to the breakdown of talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad.

The allegation came hours after the U.S. and Iranian delegations left the Pakistani capital without reaching an agreement following more than 21 hours of discussions, with differences over Iran’s nuclear programme remaining unresolved.

In a post on X, Araghchi said the call “shifted the focus from US–Iran negotiations to Israel’s interests,” adding that Washington attempted to achieve at the negotiating table what it “could not achieve through war.”

He said Iran had entered the Pakistan-hosted talks in good faith and remained committed to safeguarding its national interests and sovereignty.

Araghchi also described a press conference by Vance before his departure as “unnecessary,” reflecting Tehran’s dissatisfaction with the outcome of the discussions.

Washington has not confirmed or denied the alleged phone call.

The latest round of negotiations was seen as a potential opportunity to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran, but the talks ended without a breakthrough, highlighting persistent divisions over key issues.

Despite the deadlock, both sides have indicated that diplomatic engagement may continue.
