Police Book NC MP Ruhullah, Ex-Mayor Mattu Over Social Media Posts

Srinagar, Mar 4, KNT: Srinagar Police on Tuesday registered cases against National Conference Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly circulating misleading and unverified content on social media platforms.
In a statement issued on X, police said action was taken following credible inputs regarding the circulation of false, fabricated and misleading material aimed at creating fear, disturbing public order and inciting unlawful activities.
According to police, the content in question prima facie reflected the dissemination of distorted narratives and unverified information capable of causing public unrest and societal disharmony.
FIR No. 02/2026 and FIR No. 03/2026 have been registered under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Cyber Police Station Srinagar. An investigation has been initiated into both cases.
Police asked people to verify information through official and credible sources before sharing content online and urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified material that could disturb communal harmony or public order.
On social media, both Mehdi and Mattu had claimed that their security cover had been downgraded or withdrawn.
Ruhullah, the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, stated that he was neither intimidated nor concerned about the withdrawal of security and asserted that he would continue to exercise his constitutional rights. He alleged that downgrading his security detail and suspending his Facebook account were attempts to silence him.
Mattu also claimed that his security was withdrawn following his statements regarding Iran and the killing of Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei in the joint US-Israel air strikes. He described the move as an attempt to silence dissent.
Police, however, have maintained that the cases relate to alleged circulation of misleading content and that investigations are underway. [KNT]
