Baramulla, Sep 14, KNT: The family of a two-year-old boy from Pehlipora village of Baramulla district has alleged serious medical negligence in the treatment of their child, who has been in critical condition for nearly two months after reportedly swallowing a key.

According to the child’s parents, the boy was initially taken to Baramulla hospital after swallowing the key and was subsequently referred to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, where he was admitted to Ward 1 for treatment.

The parents said the child was taken into the operation theatre at SMHS Hospital and was brought out unconscious. They were allegedly told that anesthesia had been administered and that the child would regain consciousness after its effect wore off.

However, the parents said the child did not regain consciousness as expected, following which they sought further medical opinion.

According to the family, they subsequently took the child to the stomach specialist at Shireen Bagh Super Specialty, where doctors allegedly told them that the case did not fall within the relevant specialty and advised them to take the child to a pediatric facility.

The child was then taken to Children’s Hospital, Bemina, where, according to the parents, doctors informed them that the child’s food pipe had been cut or severely damaged during the treatment at SMHS Hospital.

The parents alleged that their son has remained in critical condition since then and is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Children’s Hospital, Bemina.

They said the child’s health has deteriorated considerably, with his weight falling from around 12 kilograms to approximately six kilograms during the period.

The family has also alleged that when they contacted the woman doctor who had treated their child at SMHS Hospital and questioned her about the alleged injury to the food pipe, she threatened to initiate a harassment case against them and asked them not to call her again.

The parents have described the entire episode as a case of serious medical negligence and are seeking accountability for what they claim happened during their child’s treatment.

The family has appealed to the authorities to examine the case and determine whether any lapse occurred during the child’s treatment.
