BJP protests in J&K Assembly over 2000 autonomy resolution reference in statehood resolution
Srinagar, Sep 28, KNT: BJP legislators on Monday staged a protest in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly over the reference to the House’s 2000 autonomy resolution in the statehood resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The BJP members objected to the reference to the June 26, 2000 resolution, which had sought restoration of greater autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir with the constitutional position that existed before August 9, 1953.
As the House proceeded with discussion on the statehood resolution, BJP members raised slogans and protested against what they described as the inclusion of the autonomy issue in a resolution seeking restoration of full statehood.
The BJP has maintained that it supports restoration of statehood but opposes linking the demand with the earlier autonomy resolution.
The statehood resolution moved by Omar Abdullah on September 25 calls upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. It states that the demand is in addition to resolutions passed by the House on June 26, 2000, and November 6, 2024.
The reference to the 2000 resolution has remained the principal point of contention between the BJP and the ruling benches since the resolution was introduced in the House.
The discussion on the resolution is continuing amid protests by BJP legislators. [KNT]
