Kargil Leaders Allege Bias in Creation of New Tehsils, Call Distribution ‘Blatantly Unjust’

Kargil, July 13, KNT: Political leaders from Kargil have strongly objected to the Union Territory Administration’s decision to create new tehsils across Ladakh, alleging that the exercise reflects a discriminatory approach towards Kargil and Drass while disproportionately favouring the erstwhile Leh district.
Reacting to the notification, the leaders claimed the allocation of new administrative units lacks fairness and fails to take into account population, geographical spread and administrative requirements. According to them, while the erstwhile Leh district has been allotted 12 new tehsils, the erstwhile Kargil district has received only five, including none for Drass.
The leaders asserted that Kargil has a larger population and a greater number of villages than the five newly created districts combined, yet its administrative needs have allegedly been overlooked. They also expressed concern that Drass, despite its sizeable population and difficult terrain, has not been granted a single additional tehsil.
They further alleged that in certain instances new tehsils have reportedly been created for a single village, raising serious questions over the criteria adopted by the administration.
Describing the decision as “brazen injustice,” the political leaders accused the administration of ignoring the legitimate aspirations of the people of Kargil and Drass and called for an immediate review of the notification to ensure equitable distribution of administrative units across Ladakh.
