Ceasefire Dispute Between US and Iran Leaves Lebanon Outside Protection, Over 250 Killed in Israeli Strike

NEWS AGENCY KASHMIR NEWS TRUST #KNT

Israeli airstrikes continued across Lebanon in the past 12 hours, killing more than 250 people and injuring over 1,000, even as a newly announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran showed immediate signs of breakdown over its scope.

The contradiction emerged at the center of the truce, with Iran and mediators indicating Lebanon was included, while both the United States and Israel rejected that interpretation and continued operations against Hezbollah targets.

The development highlights the fragility of the ceasefire, reached only hours earlier, and signals the risk of continued escalation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Israeli forces carried out widespread bombardment across multiple locations including Beirut and the Beqaa Valley overnight, with casualty figures rising as rescue efforts continued.

The International Committee of the Red Cross condemned the strikes, expressing outrage at the scale of casualties and warning of worsening humanitarian conditions.

Ceasefire Dispute and Domestic Political Context in Israel

The continuation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon despite a newly announced ceasefire has highlighted disagreements over the scope of the agreement. While Iran and some mediators indicated that Lebanon should be included, Israeli authorities have not accepted that interpretation and have continued strikes against Hezbollah targets.

The developments come amid ongoing domestic political pressures in Israel, where leadership decisions on security and military operations often carry electoral and coalition implications. However, no official statement in the current reporting directly links the latest military actions to electoral strategy.

The situation underscores the gap between diplomatic announcements and on-ground military activity, raising questions about enforcement and interpretation of ceasefire terms.

Australia and other countries called for Lebanon to be explicitly included in the ceasefire framework, cautioning that exclusion could undermine the entire agreement.

Iran accused the United States and Israel of violating the ceasefire shortly after its announcement, deepening mistrust and complicating further negotiations.

Beyond Lebanon, disruption continued in the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping traffic remained severely restricted. Only a limited number of vessels were reported to have passed, far below normal daily volumes.

Iran imposed controlled transit conditions and warned of maritime threats, leaving hundreds of ships stranded and affecting global energy supply routes.

Airspace across parts of the region, including Iraq and Bahrain, began reopening, but aviation authorities maintained warnings due to ongoing missile and drone activity.

Oil prices declined and global markets reacted positively to ceasefire signals, but uncertainty persisted as military activity continued and shipping disruptions remained unresolved.

Background:
The crisis follows escalation triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, followed by Iranian retaliation across the region, including disruption of key energy routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the announcement of a temporary ceasefire, disagreements over its scope and continued military operations indicate that the situation remains unstable.

The coming days are expected to be critical as diplomatic efforts continue amid ongoing violence and humanitarian concerns. [KNT]
