CM Hails SKUAST-K Achievement in Gucchi Cultivation, Calls It Boost to Rural Economy

Srinagar, April 11, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday congratulated Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir for achieving a significant breakthrough in morel mushroom research, describing it as a major step towards strengthening scientific innovation and rural livelihoods.
In a message, the Chief Minister commended the researchers for their work, stating that such efforts would not only enhance the region’s agri-economy but also improve its standing in the global scientific and agricultural community.
The development relates to the successful standardization of cultivation techniques for morel mushrooms, locally known as Gucchi mushroom, which have traditionally grown in the wild and are among the most expensive edible mushrooms in the world. Scientists at SKUAST-K have developed methods to grow the mushroom under controlled conditions, including greenhouse and open-field environments, potentially transforming it from a forest-dependent product into a scalable agricultural enterprise.
Officials and experts have said the breakthrough could reduce dependence on wild collection, ensure consistent supply, and open new income avenues for farmers, particularly in hilly regions.
The Chief Minister said such innovation reflects the growing role of scientific institutions in driving economic and agricultural transformation in Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
