Cyber Awareness Drive Trains Rainawari Girls to Spot Online Fraud, Phishing and Identity Theft
Srinagar, Aug 13, KNT: A three-day cyber awareness programme at Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Rainawari, has sought to equip students, teachers and other members of the school community with practical knowledge to identify online threats and protect themselves against cyber fraud.
The programme, held on August 7, 8 and 10, was organised by I3C, IIT Jammu, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha, Jammu & Kashmir, and NSS, GHSS Rainawari.
The sessions focused on threats increasingly encountered by digital users, including phishing, online fraud, scams, identity theft, misuse of personal information and risks associated with weak or compromised passwords.
Participants were also introduced to basic cyber hygiene practices, including safeguarding personal and digital information, creating and managing strong passwords, identifying suspicious online activity and using appropriate channels to report cyber incidents.
An orientation session was conducted by Sheikh Inayatullah, Chief Consultant, Cyber Security Program, I3C-IIT Jammu, who explained the objectives of the initiative and outlined the responsibilities of Cyber Nodal Officers and School Nodal Officers in implementing, coordinating and reporting cyber awareness activities.
The programme brought together students and teaching and non-teaching staff of GHSS Rainawari, Cluster School Nodal Officers and other members of the school community.
Rather than limiting the sessions to technical aspects of cybersecurity, the programme used discussions and practical examples to underline the everyday risks faced by people using smartphones, social media, messaging applications and online services.
The initiative is being implemented under the broader Cyber Awareness cum Hygiene programme of Samagra Shiksha, Jammu & Kashmir, pursuant to a communication issued by the Directorate of Samagra Shiksha on August 3.
Principal GHSS Rainawari highlighted the importance of developing cyber awareness among students and teachers, particularly as children increasingly depend on digital platforms for communication, education and other activities.
Gowhar Khursheed, NSS Programme Officer and Coordinator, coordinated the programme under the guidance of the Principal, with Activity Coordinator Maleeha Nayyar and CNO Zahoor Ahmad contributing to its organisation and conduct.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on making cyber safety a practical part of everyday digital behaviour, with participants encouraged to carry the awareness beyond the classroom and share safer online practices within their families and communities. [KNT]
