Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has approved legislation allowing the death penalty in certain cases involving deadly attacks, according to media reports and officials.

The bill, backed by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, was passed after months of political debate and is expected to apply to individuals convicted in security-related offences.

The development is significant as it marks a shift in Israel’s legal approach to capital punishment, which has historically been rarely applied, and comes amid heightened tensions in the region.

According to reports, the legislation introduces provisions under which courts may impose capital punishment in specific cases, with the measure aimed at strengthening deterrence against attacks.

Supporters of the bill said it was necessary to address security concerns and send a strong message against violence.

“This is an important step in strengthening Israel’s response to serious attacks,” a government-aligned lawmaker was quoted as saying in media reports.

However, the move has drawn criticism from human rights organisations and legal experts, who have raised concerns over its potential application and implications.

Critics argue that the law could disproportionately affect Palestinians in the occupied territories, where military courts handle many such cases.

Rights groups also questioned provisions related to judicial discretion and appeal processes, warning that the legislation could face legal challenges.

Legal analysts said the law is expected to be contested in Israel’s Supreme Court, particularly on constitutional and human rights grounds.

“There are serious legal questions that are likely to be tested in court,” a legal expert said.

Residents in Palestinian areas expressed concern over the development, with some fearing it could escalate tensions on the ground.

“There is already a tense situation, and this may make things worse,” said a resident in the West Bank.

Israel has historically maintained a limited use of the death penalty, with it being applied only in exceptional cases, most notably in the conviction of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in 1962.

The latest legislation comes at a time of ongoing conflict and heightened security concerns, with authorities emphasizing deterrence while critics warn of broader political and humanitarian consequences.
