New Delhi, March 5, KNT: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has raised fresh concerns about the safety of Indian students studying in Iran, urging authorities to consider immediate relocation and evacuation measures as the security situation in parts of the country reportedly deteriorates.

According to AIMSA, students who were recently relocated to the city of Qom have reported hearing explosions in nearby areas, triggering anxiety among students and their families.

The association also said that in Urmia city, an airstrike reportedly struck a location near a school close to a boys’ hostel, causing panic among Indian students residing in the area.

AIMSA Vice President Dr Mohammad Moomin Khan said the situation has created serious concerns about the safety of students.

“Given the deteriorating security situation, there is an urgent need to relocate students from Urmia through Armenia, similar to the evacuation route used during the June 2025 evacuation which successfully brought Indian students to safety,” Khan said.

He said the same evacuation mechanism could be used again to ensure that students in vulnerable areas are moved to safer locations.

The association also appealed for students located in nearby regions to be evacuated through the nearest safe land borders as early as possible.

“Students in surrounding areas should also be relocated through the nearest safe land borders to ensure their safety,” Khan added.

Hundreds of Indian students, many of them pursuing medical education in Iranian universities, are currently studying in cities such as Qom, Urmia and Tehran.

Student bodies and families have been closely monitoring the situation amid escalating tensions and have called for timely intervention by authorities to ensure the safety of Indian nationals abroad. [KNT]
