Drug Abuse, Traffic Chaos Dominate Police-Public Meet in North Kashmir’s Sopore

Sopore, May 1, KNT: Concerns over rising drug abuse, traffic congestion and infrastructure delays dominated a police-public interaction held at Police Station Tarzoo in Sopore on Wednesday.
The meeting, chaired by SDPO Mushtaq Ahmad along with DySP and other police officers, was attended by local representatives, Auqaf members, Masjid presidents and other prominent inhabitants of the area.
Participants began by expressing condolences over the recent killing of four police personnel in Sopore, terming the loss a tragedy for the region.
Several speakers highlighted the growing problem of narcotics abuse and called for stricter measures against drug peddlers. While acknowledging recent police action against narcotics networks, they voiced concern over what they described as quick bail for offenders and urged sustained enforcement.
Infrastructure and civic issues were also raised. Representatives demanded early completion of the Sopore bypass bridge and sought regular deployment of traffic police at the bypass crossing to address congestion and road safety concerns.
Another issue flagged during the interaction was the delay in passport clearances for children of militants seeking to undertake Haj pilgrimage, with participants urging authorities to review such cases on humanitarian grounds.
Police officials assured the gathering that the grievances would be examined and necessary steps taken within the legal framework. The interaction concluded with an understanding to maintain coordination between law enforcement and the local community. [KNT]
