Srinagar, March 20, KNT: Concerns are mounting in parts of Srinagar over delays in the disbursement of old-age pensions and wages of low-paid workers, with residents saying the situation has added to financial distress ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

People in several localities, including Eidgah and adjoining areas, said that many elderly individuals and daily-wage earners are struggling to meet basic needs as they prepare for the festival.

The issue assumes significance as Eid-ul-Fitr is a major religious occasion marked by increased household expenses, making timely payments crucial for economically vulnerable sections.

Locals said that for many beneficiaries, pensions and wages are the only source of income, used for purchasing essential commodities and medicines.

“There is difficulty in arranging even basic items. Many depend entirely on these payments,” a resident said.

Locals said elderly persons are facing hardships in accessing medical supplies and daily necessities, while low-income families are finding it difficult to participate in customary Eid celebrations.

The delay has also affected daily-wage earners, who said the absence of wages has left them with limited means to support their families during the festive period.

Locals urged authorities to take immediate steps to release pending payments and ensure that beneficiaries receive their dues without further delay.

“There should be timely disbursement so that people can celebrate the festival with dignity,” another resident said.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by vulnerable sections during festive periods and underscores the importance of efficient and timely delivery of welfare measures. [KNT]
