On a sluggish surface offering turn, Sri Lanka’s spinners initially held the upper hand, restricting England to 146 for 9 after opting to bowl. Dunith Wellalage returned figures of 3 for 26 while Maheesh Theekshana chipped in with two wickets as England struggled for fluency.
England were reduced to 68 for 4 midway through the innings, with Jos Buttler, Harry Brook and others falling cheaply. Phil Salt anchored the innings with a composed 62, counterattacking at crucial stages and ensuring his side posted a competitive total.
