Families Cut Back on Meat, Eggs Amid Rising Cost of Living

Srinagar, July 15, KNT: Spiralling prices of essential food items have become a growing concern across Kashmir, with consumers alleging a lack of market regulation and accusing traders of charging arbitrary rates, placing an increasing financial burden on households.

Consumers from several districts told Kashmir News Trust (KNT) that mutton is being sold between ₹800 and ₹820 per kilogram, while chicken is retailing at ₹200 to ₹210 per kilogram. Paneer is being sold at around ₹310 per kilogram, and a tray of eggs is fetching nearly ₹250 in many markets.

Consumers said the prices of vegetables have also witnessed a sharp increase over the past few weeks, making it difficult for middle and lower-income families to manage their daily household expenses.

“There appears to be little accountability in the market. Every seller is charging according to his own will, and there is hardly any monitoring of retail prices,” said a consumer in Srinagar.

People alleged that despite repeated complaints over escalating prices, the authorities have failed to conduct effective market inspections or ensure adherence to notified rates.

The rising prices, they said, have forced many families to reduce or altogether avoid purchasing items such as mutton, chicken and eggs, which were once considered regular components of household diets.

Several consumers urged the administration to intensify market checking, regulate prices of essential commodities and take action against traders found violating prescribed rates.

They said effective enforcement of price control mechanisms was essential to protect consumers from overcharging and ensure that essential food items remain affordable for the common people. [KNT]
