Kupwara, Dec 2, KNT: The Army on Tuesday said it foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control in the Nowgam sector of frontier Kupwara district after alert troops intercepted a group of heavily armed militants.

An Army spokesperson said a group of five to eight militants attempted to infiltrate from across the LoC during the early hours. Alert soldiers challenged the movement, leading to an exchange of fire in the forward area.

The spokesperson said the infiltration bid was effectively thwarted and the militants were forced to retreat under heavy fire. Following the gunfight, the area was cordoned off and a massive search operation was launched to track down any militants who may have taken shelter in the vicinity.

Additional troops have been deployed to strengthen the cordon, while surveillance has been intensified along the sector to prevent further attempts.

No casualties were reported on the Army side at the time of filing this report. [KNT]
