Fire Erupts at Kuwait Airport After Suspected Drone Strike, Emergency Teams Respond

Drones targeted a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday, triggering a fire but causing no casualties, Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Authority said, adding that emergency response teams acted swiftly to contain the blaze.
The incident comes amid heightened regional security concerns over critical infrastructure, with airports and energy facilities increasingly seen as vulnerable to unmanned aerial threats, though authorities said the situation was brought under control without disruption to passengers.
Emergency procedures were activated immediately after the strike, with firefighting units deployed to the site, the authority said. Thick smoke was seen rising from the affected area as crews worked to extinguish the flames using foam and water suppression systems.
Initial assessments indicated that the damage was limited to material losses, primarily involving the targeted fuel storage facility. No injuries were reported among airport staff or emergency responders, officials confirmed.
“Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Authority said emergency protocols were implemented without delay, and specialized firefighting teams successfully contained the fire,” the authority said in a statement, noting that investigations into the source and nature of the drones were underway.
Authorities did not specify the number of drones involved or provide details on their origin, but security agencies have launched a probe to determine whether the incident was accidental or deliberate. Airport operations continued with minimal disruption, according to officials.
The incident has raised concerns over the security of aviation infrastructure in the Gulf region, where similar drone-related incidents have previously targeted oil facilities and transport hubs. Experts have warned that relatively low-cost drones can pose significant risks to high-value assets if not effectively countered.
Passengers at the airport reported seeing emergency vehicles rushing toward the scene, though many said flight schedules appeared largely unaffected. “We saw smoke in the distance, but announcements said everything was under control,” one traveler said.
Kuwait International Airport is a key regional transit hub, handling millions of passengers annually and serving as a critical link for both commercial and cargo operations. The facility includes extensive fuel storage systems essential for aircraft refueling and airport logistics.
The Civil Aviation Authority said further updates would be issued as investigations progress, while reaffirming that safety and security measures remain in place across the airport.
