FSSAI Orders States to Verify Registration of Milk Vendors and Producers

Srinagar, March 12, KNT: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory directing all states and Union Territories to ensure mandatory registration or licensing of milk producers and milk vendors who are not members of dairy cooperative societies.

The advisory, issued by FSSAI’s Regulatory Compliance Division, comes amid concerns over incidents of suspected milk adulteration reported from different parts of the country and aims to strengthen regulatory oversight of dairy supply chains.

According to the advisory, certain milk producers and vendors operating outside dairy cooperative societies were found conducting business without obtaining mandatory registration or licence under FSSAI regulations.

The authority has now advised all such milk producers and vendors to register themselves with FSSAI before commencing or continuing their operations.

Officials said the measure is intended to ensure that milk sold in the market meets food safety standards and that producers remain accountable under the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The advisory also calls upon enforcement authorities at both the central and state levels to verify whether milk producers and vendors possess valid registration certificates or licences issued by FSSAI.

Authorities have further been asked to inspect milk chilling facilities used by producers and ensure that storage temperatures and infrastructure are maintained properly to prevent spoilage and safeguard public health.

In addition, state governments and Union Territory administrations have been directed to conduct special registration drives within their jurisdictions to ensure that all milk producers and vendors obtain the required certification.

The advisory said strict compliance with registration and licensing norms should be ensured across the dairy sector.

FSSAI officials also referred to an earlier directive issued in December 2025 instructing authorities to conduct regular enforcement drives targeting milk and milk products.

Under the directive, states are required to carry out enforcement activities periodically and submit action-taken reports to FSSAI on a fortnightly basis.
