Jammu, April 21, KNT: A day after a bus accident in Ramnagar area of Udhampur district claimed 21 lives, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday launched a strict enforcement drive across highways, targeting traffic violations including overspeeding, riding without helmets, and failure to wear seat belts.

The intensified checking comes as authorities move to prevent further loss of life following the fatal crash, which has raised concerns over road safety compliance in the region.

Traffic police teams have been deployed at multiple points along key highways, stopping vehicles and issuing challans to violators. Officials said enforcement is focusing on helmet use, seat belt compliance, valid driving licenses, vehicle documents, overloading, and adherence to speed limits.

Police said the drive is aimed at ensuring stricter compliance with traffic rules, particularly on highways where accidents often prove fatal due to high speeds and unsafe driving practices.

“Strict action is being taken against violators. Challans are being issued for riding without helmets, not wearing seat belts, overspeeding, and other violations,” a traffic official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Authorities have urged citizens to follow traffic rules and prioritize safety, warning that negligence on roads can have severe consequences.

The crackdown follows the deadly bus accident in Ramnagar, Udhampur, which resulted in 21 fatalities and multiple injuries, marking one of the major road tragedies in the region in recent months.

Officials said enforcement drives will continue in the coming days, with a focus on high-risk routes and repeat offenders. [KNT]
