Srinagar, Feb 26, KNT: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday officially fixed the amount of Sadaqah Fitr at Rs 80 per person for the year 2026.

Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, who also serves as Chairman of Religious Affairs, announced that the prescribed amount has been calculated in accordance with the prevailing market value of wheat. The notification emphasized that Sadaqah Fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim who possesses wealth beyond essential needs and must be discharged before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.

The circular clarified that the base calculation has been derived from the price of wheat, traditionally used as the benchmark for determining Fitrana. However, it stated that those who wish to pay according to the value of higher quality commodities such as dates, barley or raisins may contribute a higher amount in line with those rates.

The Grand Mufti’s office underlined that the objective of Sadaqah Fitr is to assist the poor and underprivileged sections of society so that they can also participate in Eid celebrations with dignity. It urged people to ensure timely payment so that the intended beneficiaries receive assistance ahead of the festival.

The announcement is expected to guide mosques, religious institutions and locals across Jammu and Kashmir in standardizing the Fitrana contribution for Ramadan 2026. [KNT]
