Srinagar, March 29, KNT: A massive rush of tourists was witnessed on Sunday at the Gulmarg Gondola, with long queues reported at ticket counters and boarding points as visitors thronged the popular destination following fresh snowfall.
Hundreds of tourists were seen standing in extended lines for hours to access the cable car service, one of the highest in the world, which operates in two phases connecting Gulmarg to Kongdoori and further to Apharwat.
The surge in footfall comes amid snowfall in higher reaches, making Gulmarg a major attraction for visitors seeking snow experiences at the end of March.
Officials said both phases of the gondola were operational, but the high volume of tourists led to delays and congestion throughout the day.
Visitors expressed excitement over the snow-covered landscape, with many engaging in photography, sledging and other recreational activities.
However, alongside the enthusiasm, several tourists and locals raised concerns over the pricing of gondola tickets, describing the rates as “too high” and “exorbitant.”
“We waited for hours in the queue, and on top of that the ticket prices are very high,” said a tourist from Delhi. “It should be more affordable, especially for families.”
Local visitors also voiced similar concerns, saying that access to one of Kashmir’s key tourist attractions should not be financially restrictive.
“Even locals have to pay the same high rates. It becomes difficult for families to afford both phases,” a resident said.
Tourism stakeholders said the rush reflects the continued popularity of Gulmarg as a premier winter destination, even toward the end of the season.
Despite the complaints, the influx of tourists is seen as a positive sign for the local economy, benefiting hotels, guides and transport services.
Gulmarg, known for its ski slopes and panoramic views, attracts visitors year-round, with snowfall events often triggering sudden spikes in tourist arrivals. [KNT]
