Srinagar, June 24, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Wednesday expressed concern over an alleged garbage dumping site near Eidgah in Hatigam, Bijbehara, claiming that large quantities of waste had accumulated in the area and posed risks to public health and the environment.
In a post on social media, Mufti alleged that tonnes of garbage had been dumped near the site and claimed that a portion of the waste was finding its way into a freshwater stream flowing below the dumping ground.
She questioned the manner in which dumping sites were being established and alleged that environmental considerations and the concerns of local residents were being overlooked.
Iltija said the issue was not merely a sanitation concern but also an environmental one, given the potential impact on water resources and the surrounding ecosystem.
Tagging district and environmental authorities, she called for intervention and urged the administration to examine the situation.
The PDP leader also raised broader concerns regarding waste management practices and emphasized the need to protect Kashmir’s fragile ecology from environmental degradation. [KNT]
