Infiltrator Killed in Uri Sector: Army
Baramulla, March 15, KNT: The Army on Sunday said it foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Uri sector, killing one suspected infiltrator during a joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir Police.
According to the Army, the operation was launched during the intervening night of March 14 and 15 following specific intelligence inputs about a possible infiltration attempt in the area.
In a statement posted on its official social media handle, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said the joint operation was launched in the general area of Buchhar in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.
“Based on a specific intelligence input provided by Jammu and Kashmir Police regarding an infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched on the intervening night of March 14–15 in the general area of Buchhar, Uri sector,” the Army said.
Officials said troops deployed in the area noticed suspicious movement in a thickly forested patch during the operation.
According to the Army, security personnel adjusted their ambush positions after spotting the movement.
“The ambush was readjusted and the terrorist was challenged, resulting in the terrorist opening indiscriminate fire,” the statement said.
Officials said the troops retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire in which the infiltrator was killed.
The Army said the slain infiltrator was believed to be a Pakistani national.
Security forces recovered weapons and other material from the site of the encounter.
“Warlike stores including an AK rifle, pistols and a large quantity of ammunition have been recovered,” the Army said.
Officials said search operations were continuing in the area to rule out the presence of additional infiltrators.
Security forces frequently conduct surveillance and patrol operations along the LoC to prevent infiltration attempts.
The Uri sector in north Kashmir has witnessed several infiltration attempts in the past due to its proximity to the LoC and dense forest cover in certain stretches.
Officials said security forces remain on high alert along the border to counter infiltration attempts and maintain vigil in sensitive areas. [KNT]
