Iran has claimed to have shot down a United States fighter jet over its territory and captured the pilot, even as Washington has not confirmed the fate of the crew, in a major escalation in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Reports of the downing of the aircraft have been widely circulated, with multiple sources indicating that a US jet was brought down inside Iran, prompting an immediate search-and-rescue operation.
The development marks a significant escalation, as it would be one of the first confirmed instances of a US military aircraft being downed in the current conflict.
Iranian state media and officials said the pilot ejected after the aircraft was hit and was subsequently captured. Authorities also reportedly issued public appeals asking civilians to assist in locating the pilot while urging them not to mistreat him.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the United States regarding the capture, and the condition or whereabouts of the pilot remain unclear.
US forces were reported to have launched search operations, with military aircraft seen flying at low altitudes over parts of Iran in an apparent attempt to locate the missing crew.
Videos circulating on social media show aircraft flying low and what appears to be debris from a downed jet. Some unverified footage also suggests civilians reacting to the incident, though these visuals could not be independently confirmed.
Officials and analysts cautioned that information emerging from conflict zones often includes unverified claims and competing narratives.
“This is a fluid situation, and verification remains critical,” a defence analyst said.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel, with missile exchanges and military activity increasing across the region in recent days.
If confirmed, the capture of a US pilot would represent a major development with potential diplomatic and military implications.
