The Football Association of Ireland is facing mounting pressure from politicians, fans and football officials after confirming it will honour its upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel later this year.
The controversy erupted after Ireland and Israel were drawn together in Group B3 of the 2026-27 Nations League, alongside Austria and Kosovo. The draw has reignited debate in Ireland given that the FAI had voted in November to submit a motion to UEFA seeking Israel’s suspension from European club and international competitions.
Despite that earlier stance, the association has now indicated that it intends to fulfil the scheduled matches, which are due to take place in September and October. The decision has drawn criticism from several quarters, including Sinn Féin spokeswoman on culture, communications and sport Joanna Byrne, who said the FAI’s earlier position had been “moral and principled” and questioned the consistency of proceeding with the fixtures.
Byrne also criticised UEFA for not suspending the Israel Football Association amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, alleging that Ireland had been placed in a difficult position by the governing body’s refusal to take action.
The issue has also attracted international political attention. US Senator Lindsey Graham previously accused Ireland of leading efforts to “punish the Jewish people” after the FAI’s vote, while reports suggested that former US President Donald Trump opposed any attempt to block Israel’s participation in global tournaments.
Daniel Lambert of Bohemian FC argued that UEFA statutes provide mechanisms for suspension in exceptional circumstances and urged broader political and sporting pressure to address the matter. While he acknowledged that a boycott might reflect public sentiment, he said responsibility should not fall solely on players or fans.
UEFA has so far maintained its position, leaving Ireland set to face Israel as scheduled unless further developments intervene. [KNT]
