Pakistan has deployed fighter jets and military assets to Saudi Arabia under a bilateral defence agreement, the Saudi Defence Ministry said, as reported by Reuters, in a move that underscores deepening military cooperation between the two countries amid heightened regional tensions.
The Saudi Defence Ministry said Pakistani fighter jets and support aircraft have arrived at King Abdulaziz Air Base in the kingdom’s eastern province, a strategic location near critical energy infrastructure.
The deployment comes in the backdrop of recent attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, which officials said struck key energy facilities and resulted in casualties, raising concerns over security in the Gulf region.
The development assumes significance as Pakistan hosts high-level diplomatic talks involving the United States and Iran, positioning itself at the center of evolving geopolitical dynamics.
The deployment is being seen as part of operational coordination under a mutual defence pact signed between Riyadh and Islamabad in September 2025. The agreement commits both countries to consider any aggression against one as an attack on both, marking a significant expansion of their long-standing defence relationship.
Officials said the pact institutionalized military cooperation that had historically included training, advisory roles, and joint exercises, but now extends to active deployment of assets in response to emerging threats.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have maintained close security ties for decades, with cooperation spanning intelligence sharing, counterterrorism efforts, and military training programs. The latest deployment reflects a shift toward a more formalized and responsive defence framework under the 2025 agreement.
While Saudi authorities described the deployment as part of security enhancement measures, the move comes at a time of increased volatility in the region, particularly linked to tensions involving Iran and concerns over maritime routes and energy supplies.
The eastern province, where the aircraft have been deployed, houses key oil facilities that are central to global energy markets, making their protection a strategic priority for Saudi Arabia.
The timing of the deployment has also drawn attention due to its overlap with ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between the United States and Iran, with Pakistan playing a facilitative role.
Analysts have said such parallel developments—military reinforcement alongside diplomatic engagement—highlight the complexity of the regional situation, where countries are balancing deterrence with negotiation.
Neither Pakistan nor Saudi Arabia has disclosed the exact number of aircraft deployed or the duration of the deployment, but officials indicated that the move is aligned with existing bilateral commitments.
The Saudi Defence Ministry statement did not specify whether additional forces would be deployed in the coming days.
The development is likely to be closely watched by regional and global stakeholders, particularly in the context of energy security, strategic alignments, and the broader stability of the Gulf region.
