Srinagar, April 10, KNT: Scientists at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir have standardized the cultivation of Gucchi (Morchella), one of the world’s most expensive wild mushrooms, enabling its production under controlled greenhouse and open-field conditions.

The development marks a significant shift for the prized mushroom, traditionally collected from forests and known for its limited availability and high market value.

According to information shared by the institution, researchers have successfully developed protocols that allow consistent production of Morchella species outside their natural habitat. The standardization includes both greenhouse-based systems and open-field cultivation methods.

The breakthrough is expected to reduce dependence on wild harvesting, which has long been the primary source of Gucchi, and create opportunities for its cultivation as a commercial crop.

Officials associated with the development said the move could help transform the mushroom from a rare forest product into a scalable agricultural enterprise, potentially benefiting farmers through diversification into high-value crops.

Gucchi mushrooms are widely regarded for their culinary and medicinal value and command premium prices in domestic and international markets due to their rarity and demand.

The ability to cultivate the species under controlled conditions is likely to improve supply consistency and may contribute to the growth of the region’s bio-economy, particularly in high-altitude and temperate areas suited for such production systems. [KNT]
