Ladakh LG Kavinder Gupta Resigns After Less Than Nine Months in Office

Leh, March 6, KNT: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta resigned on Thursday, stepping down from the post less than nine months after assuming office.
Gupta had taken charge as the third Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory in July last year, succeeding Brigadier (Retd) B D Mishra, who had been appointed in February 2024.
A veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Janipur in Jammu, Gupta previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Speaker of the J&K Legislative Assembly and Mayor of Jammu for three consecutive terms.
After being appointed as the LG on July 17, Gupta had thanked President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP workers, and said he would work collectively for the development of Ladakh.
During his tenure, Ladakh witnessed several protests and youth-led agitations, with civil society groups including the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance demanding statehood, Sixth Schedule protections and job reservations for locals.
Gupta’s resignation comes amid continuing political discussions in the region over governance and constitutional safeguards.
Meanwhile, reports said that West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose also resigned earlier in the day, submitting his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.
Further details regarding Gupta’s resignation and his successor are awaited. [KNT]
