Srinagar, June 1, KNT: Former Sadr-i-Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir, Karan Singh on Saturday expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the world famous Dal Lake and urged the State Government to take urgent steps for its preservation.
Interacting with representatives of various social organisations in Srinagar, Dr Singh said that Dal Lake remains the backbone of Kashmir’s tourism industry and any neglect in its conservation could have long term adverse consequences for the region’s economy and environment.
He appealed to the government to ensure that all funds provided by the Central Government for restoration and conservation of the lake are utilised in a proper and transparent manner. Stressing the urgency of action, he warned that if effective measures are not taken immediately, Dal Lake may gradually lose its significance on the tourism map of the State.
Dr Singh also called for the immediate dismantling of all encroachments found in and around the lake, stating that illegal constructions and unchecked human interference were contributing significantly to its degradation. He urged the authorities to act without delay and implement major corrective steps to safeguard the fragile ecosystem.
Representatives of various social organisations present during the interaction appealed to Dr Singh to use his influence to find ways and means to save the historic water body from further decline. They expressed concern over pollution, encroachments and administrative inaction.
Dr Singh assured them that sustained efforts and coordinated action were necessary to preserve Dal Lake for future generations. [KNT]
